Hiring

Stop hiring a COO to fix a founder habit

Three questions to ask before you open the search.

· 5 min read · · Decided no. 111

Half the COO searches I am asked about are really a founder asking someone else to say no on their behalf. Before you open the search, answer three questions in writing.

What will this person decide that I decide today? Name ten things. If you cannot, you are hiring a second pair of hands, not a COO.

What will I stop doing on their first day? If the answer is nothing, they will spend their first year waiting for you.

Who decides when we disagree? Write it down now, while you are calm.

If you can answer all three, hire. If not, start with the habit; the hire will be better for it.
